Moody Depot Receives Historical Marker

The Temple Historic Preservation Committee hosted a reception honoring the Moody Depot as the latest recipient of a Temple Historic Marker. The reception was held on Saturday, August 6th, at 11:30A.M. in the Moody Depot on 403 W Ave B.

The Moody Depot was built in 1881 effectively putting Moody on the map; it was later enlarged in 1901 to accommodate more freight and passengers. The big brown and yellow depot was later moved in 1975 off the railroad property to the City of Temple and is now used as the headquarters for the Central Texas Area Model Railroaders Organization.

Annual Meeting and Election to be held in November

The Membership Meeting for October 2009 was called to order October 3rd in the historic Moody Depot by Club President Wiley Starnes at 10:29.

The minutes for September 2009 were presented. A motion was made by Trace Bowen and seconded by Steffon Norris to accept the minutes as read. The motion passed. The Treasurer’s report was submitted, read, and accepted.

Old Business

The Annual Meeting will be held November 7th. Nominations for Dick Copeland, Ed Neill, and Clark Overman were submitted prior to the meeting. Steffon Norris and Fred Price were subsequently nominated and nominations were closed. Wiley Starnes directed the club secretary to prepare a ballot with these names for elections to be held at the November Annual Meeting.

Ed Neill reported the club’s application for 501(c)(3) status has been filed with the IRS.

Wiley Starnes reported he spoke with Judy at the RRHM about the Cowcatcher article and she was aware of the problem. She checked some other fliers and found that CentraMod was not mentioned on those either.

Ron Miller reminded everyone of the Baylor show in December. Setup will begin Monday, 11/30. The display will open to the public on Saturday, 12/5 and run through Sunday, 1/3/10. Teardown will begin 1/4. Contact Ron if you are interested in participating.

Dan Ladd said he has plenty of curved track but still needs 36 pieces of straight track. He also still needs one more transformer and one more train for the RRHM Christmas display.

New Business

Wiley Starnes announced:

  • Ed Bain is a new member from Temple, TX who models in O & HO.
  • Ed Neill has volunteered to serve as Assistant Treasurer.
  • A train ride will be offered the weekend of 10/23-24 while the club is open to offer an operating session in conjunction with the RRHM Railfan weekend.

Dan Ladd announced that Russ’ Rail Stuff said he still had the artwork for club caps and shirts. Steffon Norris volunteered to collect requests for caps and shirts and get a quote from Russ.

J.C. Fischer asked about putting a sign on the emergency exit door directing visitors to the main entrance. Bill Lancaster said he already had a sign, he just needs to put up the back steps’ railing.

J.C. Fischer made a motion to adjourn and Steve Wyatt seconded. The club adjourned at 10:54.

Final Preparations Made for Train Show

The Membership Meeting for September 2009 was called to order September 5th in the historic Moody Depot by Club President Wiley Starnes at 10:26.

The minutes for August 2009 were presented. A motion was made by Bradley Linda and seconded by Bill Lancaster to accept the minutes as read. The motion passed. The Treasurer’s report was submitted, read, and accepted.

Old Business

Raffle Layout – The layout was displayed at the Temple Mall the last two weekends of August and a number of raffle tickets were sold. Extraco Bank sponsored the raffle layout again this year. Because of member donations, the layout was under budget and the excess funds will be placed back in the general fund.

Train Show – Jim Bush said that new members will not be listed on the train show worksheet. If you want to volunteer, come to the info table at the show. Setup on Friday, September 18th will run from 1500-2200. This is when help will be most needed. Show tear-down will run from 1700-2100 on Sunday, September 20th. During the show, if you want something to do, come to the information booth. Wiley Starnes asked members to talk to vendors and see how they would feel about moving the show to a weekend in October to avoid conflict with hurricanes. Bill Lancaster said the depot needs to be cleaned today in preparation for the train show open house.

Ron Miller submitted the only bid for the N Scale layout up for auction.

Dan Ladd still needs track, trains, and transformers for the RRHM Christmas display.

New Business

Wiley Starnes announced:

  • Troy Wolff is no longer a club member.
  • Dave Douglass is a new member from Belton, TX who models in HO.
  • Egon Schlottmann is a new member from Waco, TX who models in HO.
  • The Annual Meeting will be held November 7th. Three director positions will be voted on. If you want to serve as a director, turn your name into the club secretary. The deadline for nominations is the October Membership Meeting.
  • The January Membership meeting will be held the third weekend of January 2010 due to conflicts the first two weekends with the Baylor and Waco shows.

Mike Hitzfelder announced that the Austin Steam Train Association is seeking volunteers October 9-11. See Mike for more information if you are interested.

Bradley Linda made a motion to run the HVAC on Labor Day for an HO operating session. Steve Wyatt seconded and the motion passed.

Steve Wyatt announced he had a Gorre & Daphetid photo collage CD if anyone is interested.

The relationship between CentraMod and the RRHM was discussed. Wiley Starnes said he would ask the RRHM why they claimed they were holding an HO operating session in the Cowcatcher Magazine.

Bradley Linda made a motion to adjourn and Trace Bowen seconded. The club adjourned at 11:18.

Club to Display at Temple Mall

Old Business

Bill Lancaster reported that he thinks the Temple Mall has a good location for the club to exhibit the last two weekends of August. He is waiting for confirmation on the space. Bradley Linda made a motion for setup, display, and teardown at the Temple Mall to be an official club function. Joe Pyland seconded and the motion passed. Ed Neill volunteered to seek newspaper coverage for the event.

Ed Neill reported that he has Train Show pre-sale tickets available.

New Business

Wiley Starnes announced:

  • Chik-fil-A will be back at the RRHM on 8/15. See the RRHM for more information.
  • Trish Butler has donated many model railroading magazines to the club.
  • The RRHM is offering a railfan trip to Killeen. See the RRHM for more information.

Wiley Starnes reported that he and Earl Blanchette had worked on the donated N Scale layout and made its control panel removable. Bradley Linda made a motion to sell the N Scale layout as is, where is, by sealed bid to be opened the first Saturday of September, and removed by the winning bidder no later than September 15th. Buddy Burk seconded and the motion passed. Sealed bids must be made in person between now and the first Saturday in September no later than 10:00. The layout can be viewed at the historic Moody depot during visiting hours. Joe Pyland made a motion for proceeds of the layout sale to go to the general fund. Trace Bowen seconded and the motion passed.

An operations clinic will be held on 8/8 to be followed by an operating session after lunch.

The ATSF Historical and Modeling Society will be holding their 2012 convention in Temple, TX.

Wiley Starnes reported receiving a letter from the City of Temple approving requested changes to the depot’s front door and storage cage in the HO layout area. The HO group will submit a plan for what they intend to do with the storage area.

Wiley Starnes read a letter from the RRHM requesting support for a 2009 Christmas layout that would run all weekends in December. Ed Neill made a motion for this to be a club function, Steve Wyatt seconded, and the motion passed. Volunteers, track, and transformers are needed. The HO group requested and was approved to use the HVAC as needed on 8/8 and 8/29.
