N Scale Traveling Layout

N Scale also has a traveling layout made up of modules owned by individual club members.

History

The traveling layout really got started in 2001 when the N Scale group reached that “critical mass” of four members who could plan something and still carry it off if one couldn’t be there. One of the new members was Ron Miller who already had several modules and the other was Michael Hiersig. Even though Michael still doesn’t own a module in the traveling layout, he carries his weight by helping with the work and providing DCC support. Bill Lancaster built four 4’ modules and two 2’ corners to go with the ones Ron had and we were off to the races! Several other people joined in 2004, including Mike Ross, who built six other modules including two 4’ corners to go with Ron’s 4’ corners.

Current Layout Activities

December 2006 and January 2007 was a busy time the traveling layout. We joined with layouts from other scales to put on a display at the Mayborn Museum at Baylor University for almost three weeks during the holidays. We also participated in the Toy and Train Show in Waco the first week of January 2007.

Layout Plans

We are currently in the process of adding other modules from new members in our club and rebuilding some of Ron’s old modules built in the ‘70s which have particle board tops. We thought that was the way to go then, but now it’s seven layer birch plywood from “China” – who would have thunk it!
